This summer has been one on Vietnamese history: some for research and some for the sheer pleasure of knowledge. Before turning to prepping for fall classes, I wish to have one more write-up about several articles read in the last two months. The focus is Vietnamese history but away from the Vietnam War. Câu đố: Nước Mỹ có 50 tiểu bang. Bao nhiêu tiểu bang có tên gốc da đỏ? 10 tiểu bang? 15? 20? 25? 30? 40?
Vào cuối thế kỷ thứ 15, tức thời kỳ Âu Châu thám hiểm đến Bắc Mỹ, thế giới thổ dân da đỏ thay đổi khá nhiều từ hay thế kỷ trước. Về dân số thì ước tính từ ba đến sáu triệu người trước khi Christopher Columbus và người Âu Châu qua. Còn toàn Tân Thế Giới thì từ 10 đến 20 triệu người. Trên một lục địa lớn lao, người da đỏ có đủ thành phần về cơ sở, tổ chức, kinh tế, v.v.

Sau khi tìm hiểu tiền sử người da đỏ hai miền tây nam và tây bắc, chúng ta qua miền đông. Bây giờ chúng ta vào giữa nước Mỹ, vùng đồng bằng mà người Mỹ gọi là “the Great Plains”: Đồng Bằng To Lớn, Đồng Bằng Vĩ Đại, Đại Đồng Bằng.

Trong phần trước, chúng ta nói về truyền thống Adena và Hopewell bên miền đông thời tiền sử. Hai thế hệ văn hóa to lớn này thuộc vào nền văn hóa Woodland mà chúng ta có thể dịch là văn hóa Địa Mộc. Khi chia ra theo thời gian, thì truyền thống Adena thuộc thời kỳ mà người Mỹ gọi là Early Woodland, chúng ta có thể dịch vừa sát nghĩa vừa văn chương là văn hóa Tiền Địa Mộc. Sau văn hóa Adena thì tới văn hóa Hopewell, thuộc thời Middle Woodland tức Trung Địa Mộc.

I again browsed the website of the National Library of Vietnam, and here’s one more post on humor under colonialism.
The following comic strip is from another Hanoi weekly in the 1930s. It isn’t satirical in the manner of the piece from Vịt Đực [Male Duck] described in my last post. Nor is it political. But it pokes fun at the colonial tax system while drawing (literally) the growing petit bourgeois mindset among Vietnamese during the late colonial period.
