Bài lời Việt theo sau bài tiếng Anh. Hai bài hao hao nội dung nhưng không giống hẳn. The Vietnamese portion follows the English. I cater each language to different readers and they aren’t entirely the same.

April 30 was of course the climax of the fortieth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the beginning of mass Vietnamese migration to the U.S.  But there’s still a lot of the anniversary year left.

Tomorrow is the first day of classes at my institution, and I will continue to honor this anniversary by posting about Vietnamese music related to war and refugees throughout the fall semester and into the spring semester.

I will limit them to a list of ten war songs (recorded before 1975) and a list of ten refugee songs (after).  In my opinion, these songs are among the finest artistic creations by Vietnamese and Vietnamese Americans about their twentieth-century upheavals.

I also wish to call attention to two basic complications about making “top” or “best of” lists.

First and foremost, list-making is quite subjective, especially when there are a lot options as the case here.  In South Vietnam and the diaspora, Vietnamese recorded a lot music in addition countless print materials.  Let’s just say that this exercise has helped me think harder about criteria and standards and the reasons for placing a particular song on either list.

Making “best of” lists also smacks of amateurishness. It sounds catchy than deep, superficial than substantial.  That such lists often appear as numerals instead of letters – “best 10” or “top 20” – suggests the tendency towards the popular than the serious.

That said, I hope to refine my blogging thoughts later and turn them into something more respectable, scholarship even.

Although I have not finalized either list, I already knew that several songs will definitely appear on them.  I’m still debating the rest: which ones to include, which ones to leave out.  We’ll see.

These songs were generally recorded in South Vietnam, the U.S., and France approximately between 1965 and 1985.  I will translate each one into English and discuss its merits.  Some of the songs remain well known to this day, but there are several that might be almost forgotten.

(I leave out songs from North Vietnam and the National Liberation Front: the so-called nhạc đỏ or “red music.” They deserve a separate analysis on background, structure, and, yes, design as propaganda.)

Vietnamese contributed to artistic articulation of the universal experience of war, suffering, and displacement by several means. Poetry: yes. Fiction: some.  Painting: little.

I think, however, that their greatest contribution is through the venue of popular music.  It is a pity that their war and refugee music isn’t better made known to the world.

I hope that non-Vietnamese speakers will know more about this music – and Vietnamese speakers will re-evaluate it with decades-long hindsight.

Ngày ba mươi tháng tư năm nay qua rồi, nhưng cá nhân tôi muốn tiếp tục tưởng niệm bốn mươi năm chấm dứt chiến tranh Việt Nam và mở đầu làn sóng tị nạn và di cư qua Hoa Kỳ.  Trong năm học mới, tôi sẽ viết trên blog này về nhạc Việt trong đề tài chiến tranh (thâu trước 1975 tại VNCH) và đề tài tị nạn (sau đó bên Hoa Kỳ và Âu Châu).

Trong các môn văn học và văn nghệ VNCH và hải ngoại, tôi nhận xét đánh giá nhạc phổ thông đứng đầu sáng tạo về chủ đề chiến tranh và tị nạn. Đề tài chiến tranh liên quan đến cả nhân loại chứ không phải chỉ đất nước này, không phải chỉ dân tộc kia.  Nhạc Việt đáng được phổ biết đến những người không biết tiếng Việt, vì chiến tranh và mất mát là những đề tài muôn thuở trong nghệ thuật toàn thế giới. 

Trong thời gian 1965-1985, người Việt sáng tác và thâu âm rất nhiều nhạc trong hai chủ đề trên.  Trong hai loạt bài tới, tôi giới hạn mỗi đề một danh sách mười bài hát thể hiện văn nghệ xuất sắc nhất.

Tôi sẽ dịch lời mỗi bản nhạc ra tiếng Anh, kèm theo một ít lời bàn và phân tích trong tiếng Anh. Hầu hết các bản nhạc này vẫn phổ thông tới hôm nay, nhưng cũng có vài bản nhạc bị quên lãng theo thời gian và ít người nghe hay trình diễn bây giờ.
